| LymphEdema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial tissue that causes swelling, most often in the arm(s) and/or leg(s), and occasionally in other parts of the body. Lymphedema can develop when lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired (primary), or when lymph vessels are damaged or lymph nodes removed (secondary). Two major causes of Secondary LymphEdema are removal of lymph nodes during surgery (such as a mastectomy), and radiation afterwards. Secondary lymphedema can develop immediately post-operatively, or weeks, months, even years later. It can also develop when chemotherapy is unwisely administered to the already affected area (the side on which the surgery was performed). |
| Meanwhile, if you have had a mastectomy OR radiation, (not to mention both!), you are at risk for LymphEdema THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!! No more blood pressure, no more IVs or blood draws, no more heavy lifting, EVER! You risk initiating the swelling and once you have LymphEdema, you will ALWAYS have it, FOREVER!!! There is NO cure for it!! Also, you have to prevent, as best you can, bug bites, bee stings, cuts, scrapes, hangnails, sunburn, contact with hot water (no more hot tubs or hot showers or hot baths or washing dishes!) Well, while I like no more washing dishes, the rest of that sucks! :( |
